John worked alongside his father in their clothing and furnishing shop. The store was located in the Alger Block which his father built in West Gardner center (now referred to as downtown). The building no longer exists but it was located at the corner of Vernon and Parker Streets.

The Algers first appeared in a census for Gardner in the 1865 state census. Listed were Jonathan L. Alger, tailor, Abby S. Alger, John L. Alger, 15, and Flora A. Alger, 11. The grandparents Whitcomb, Franklin and Charlotte, lived in their home as well.

In 1870 John, 20, was employed at a chair shop. He was still at home with his sister, parents and grandparents.

By 1880, Mr. Alger's wife, Hattie, had joined the household. John was running his clothing store.

In 1900 John and Hattie lived in Medford, Massachusetts. They had a son Jonathan "John" Porter Alger, 18, who was listed with them in the census. No occupations were recorded for any of them. A 28-year-old Irish servant named Annie Lyons lived with them.

Mr. Alger and his son John were lodging in Boston, Massachusetts on Pembroke Street in 1910. His wife had died in Medford in '04. His son was a general agent for an importing company.

John L. Alger, working as a traveling salesman, died in Richmond, Virginia in 1912.
