Herbert Eugene Clark, a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel and Combat Infantry Veteran of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, died after battling cancer on Monday, September 14, 2009 at Reeder''s Memorial Home in Boonsboro, Maryland.
Born January 28, 1924 in Havre de Grace, Maryland, he was the son of the late Herbert James Clark and Elizabeth Genevieve Poplar Clark.
A resident of the Hagerstown area since 1969, he taught Labor Economics and related courses at Shepherd University until 1991, retiring as an Associated Professor Emeritus. Col. Clark attended Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, and graduated from Havre de Grace High School in 1940. After high school, he began studies at the University of Maryland, and then served as on early paratrooper in the European Theater during WWII with the 17th and 82nd Airborne Division. Following the war he returned to the University of Maryland and graduated with a B.S. degree in Industrial Relations, and received his Regular Army Commission. Col. Clark was a graduate of the Regular Infantry Officers Course, and the Command and General Staff College. He also received a Masters Degree in Industrial Relations from West Virginia University and continued graduate work at American University. Col. Clark served in Korea with the 1st Raider Company. He completed duty in Panama and Japan as the executive officer of the 501st Airborne Infantry, as well as duty on the General and Joint Staff. He served as a provincial advisor in Vietnam. His last assignment was with the ROTC program at West Virginia University. Col. Clark retired from active duty in 1969 after 24 years of service to his country. Col. Clark''s military decorations include; the Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters for valor, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Purple Heart, the Korean Warang, Distinguished Service Cross, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, the U.S. and Korean President''s Unit Citations, and the one of which he was most proud, three awards of the Combat Infantry Badge. Clark was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown, the Theta Chi Fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity, and the Scabbard and Blade Military Honorary Foundation. He was also a member of the Fountain Head Country Club, the "M" club of the University of Maryland, the Terrapin Club, and served on the Shepherd University Foundation Board.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jean E. Highbarger Clark, who was his college sweetheart; three children, R. Douglas Clark and his wife Lori, of Williamsport, MD, Pamella Clark Gillette, and her husband Ted, of Ashland, VA, and Bonnie Lee Dowd and her husband John Strong, of Lacey, WA; four grandchildren, Miriam Dowd, Herbert James Clark II, Elizabeth Gillette, and Alex Gillette. He is also survived by three nephews; Elwood Stark, Jr., Thomas Lyon, Jr. and Bruce Lyon.
He was preceded in death by two sisters; Genevieve Stark, and Marie Helen Lyon.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Friday, September 18, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave. Hagerstown, MD with the Rev. Stephanie Yancy officiating.
Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Ft. George G. Meade Honor Guard. Following the graveside service, a reception will be held at the funeral home. Friends will be received at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
