Col. Michael Barszcz, Ret., 79, of Robinson, IL, died at his home of an apparent heart attack Saturday, April 14, 2001. He was born October 18, 1921 in Mosinee, Wisconsin, the son of Michael Barszcz and Helen Wojcik Barszcz.

Col. Barszcz began his Army career in 1940 as an enlisted man. Two years later, he received a 2nd Lieutenant's commission upon graduation from Office Candidate School at Ft. Benning, GA. During WWII he served in the Pacific where he participated in campaigns from Guadalcanal to the Philippines. He was a veteran of combat in Korea and Vietnam, with tours in Europe and Japan. Among the medals he earned in his career were the Silver Star for action in Korea, the Purple Heart for wounds received in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He also received the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit among other medals and citations. He retired from the U.S. Army on April 30, 1970 after 30 years of service, where upon he moved to Robinson.

He was a member of the Robinson Elks Lodge #1188, the Robinson American Legion Post #69, the Robinson VFW Post #4549, and the Robinson Moose Lodge #1369.

He married Annette Reizer on January 10, 1942 and she survives. He is also survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law; his son and daughter-in-law; 5 grandchildren; and his brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Olga Barszcz, Mosinee, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his parents and 9 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services at the Goodwine Funeral Home, Robinson. Graveside services with military honors at Camp Butler National Veteran's Cemetery.
