Cinematographer. Active as a still photographer in his native Germany, he taught his younger brother Henry the art and the two opened a portrait studio in New York City in the late 1890s. He kept at it until 1916, when growing World War I anti-German sentiment compelled him to accept his sibling's invitation to come to Hollywood. Cronjager went on to have a busy career in B pictures, shooting some 100 features for Vitagraph, Select, and various independent producers. He worked frequently with director Ralph Ince. His films include "The Destroyers" (1916), "Reckless Youth" (1922), "Ladies Beware" (1927), "Chinatown After Dark" (1931), and "Easy Millions" (1933). Although he adopted well to talkies, health issues led to his retirement in 1933 and he died the following year. He was the uncle of cinematographer Edward Cronjager, and his family's descendants were active as film and TV cameramen into the 1990s.
