Mutineer. Able-bodied Seaman aboard the HMS Bounty. During the mutiny on April 28, 1789, Burkett was part of the group who arrested Commander William Bligh in his cabin. In 1791 he was captured in Tahiti by a search party from the HMS Pandora; he survived the sinking of that ship in August and was condemned by a court-martial in England. On October 29, 1792, Burkett and fellow mutineers Thomas Ellison and John Millward were hanged aboard the HMS Brunswick in Spithead, England. As was usually the case with mutineers, their bodies were left to rot on gibbets as a warning to other sailors, and never given a proper burial.
