Son of Charles and Mary Norman ~ British Seaman / Carpenter's Mate on the HMS Bounty. Ship's Carpenter William Purcell, Norman's immediate supervisor on the Bounty, described him as "sober, diligent, and attentive". After the mutiny on April 28, 1789, he was kept on the ship against his will because a carpenter was needed and Fletcher Christian did not want Purcell, who was too cantankerous for his taste. Christian did not, however, force Norman to go with him from Tahiti to Pitcairn Island. He was one of the loyalists arrested by the command of the HMS Pandora in March 1791. Norman survived the sinking of the Pandora in August and was eventually returned to England in March 1792. At the Bounty court-martial in September 1792, Norman was acquitted due in part to the testimonies of William Purcell, William Cole and the submittal of a letter by Captain Bligh stating that he was innocent of mutiny.
