Cricketer. Robert Carpenter was one of England's top cricket professionals during the 1860's and early 1870's. He started playing as early as 1844 while working as a boot closer before becoming a full-time cricket professional around 1854. Made his first-class debut for Cambridge Town against the university in 1855 and later played for the United All England Eleven for more than a decade, during which time he was their major player, captain and secretary. Toured the US and Canada in 1859 on the first tour abroad. Played his last first-class match in 1876 and then became an umpire for 22 years. In his 22 year career, he scored 14,600 runs in 766 innings, with 81 not outs and 5,220 runs in 1st-class matches at an average of 24.39 with 190 catches.
