Professional Cricketer. He received notoriety as an English cricketer, who held the unequalled record of taking 19 wickets in a single match against Australia in 1956. He played for Surrey County Cricket Club from 1946 to 1959 and represented England in 46 Test matches. A right arm player, he is regarded as one of the greatest spin bowlers in cricket history. He was selected by Wisden Cricketers' Almanack as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year in the 1952 edition. He was selected as the New Zealand Cricket Almanack Player of the Year in 1952 after playing for Auckland that season. Later, he was selected in 1956 as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, and after retirement, he became a BBC television cricket presenter. After joining the army in 1941, he served in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps in Palestine and Cairo until 1945, but had no front-line experience. While in the military, he met his future wife. The couple married in 1951 and had two daughters.
