DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER
NICHOLAS BACKES DIES AT THE FAMILY HOME NEAR COLD SPRING AT THE AGE OF NINETY YEARS

Nicholas Backes, who lived a mile from Cold Spring, died Thursday night, following a very brief illness. Up to a day or two before his death the old gentleman was up and around and walked to church last Sunday. He was almost 90 years old and was a pioneer settler of Stearns County. Four sons survive, all grown, John and Jacob Backes, of Richmond; Nich Backes, at Cold Spring; and Peter Backes, at Farming. In addition there are a number of other relatives throughout the county. The funeral was held from St. Boniface church at Cold Spring at 9:30 Saturday morning, and the remains of the pioneer were followed to their final resting place by a large number of relatives and friends.

************************

Nikolaus Backes was born in Nunkirchen, Germany, the son of Franz and Johannetta (Weyand) Backes. He married Barbara Becker November 11, 1841 in Nunkirchen.

Nikolaus and Barbara had 10 children:
Peter
Maria
Barbara (Klein)
Jacob
Johann
Elizabeth (Knaus)
Nikolaus
Margaret (Kirsch)
Nickolaus
Joseph

**********************

Family research records show his date of birth as September 12, 1813 while his gravestone shows his dob as September 29, 1812, which I believe to be incorrect. His parents were married January 14, 1813.
