ALLEN ROBERT ETHAN and KATHARINE HOUSE ALLEN

ROBERT ETHAN ALLEN, 87, born March 5, 1925, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2012, after a valiant fight, but more importantly, after a long and full life. His passing was followed 4 days later by the unexpected death of his beloved wife of 63 years, Katharine House Allen. Born in Cleveland and raised throughout the Great Lakes region, Robert enlisted in the Army after the outbreak of World War II, returning to Ohio after the war, where he attended Oberlin College and earned his Masters Degree in Political Science and History. Settling in Northeast Ohio to raise a family with his wife Katharine, he taught high school history and social studies at Westlake High School for over 30 years, leaving an indelible mark on countless students. A lifelong avid ham radio operator, he established a network of fellow "hams." He loved photography and nature, reveling in what he could learn and pass on from the world around him. He was an inspiring teacher, a mentor, a loyal and loving father and husband, a voracious reader and a man who demonstrated a compassion for the underdog, always looking for a way to uplift mankind. His thirst for knowledge and insight was unquenchable.

KATHARINE HOUSE ALLEN, 85, was born Dec. 31, 1926 in Orlando, FL., but grew up near the shores of Lake Michigan in Saugatuck, where her father was a fruit farmer. She passed peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on May 3, 2012 following a brief illness. Katharine attended Oberlin College as well, obtaining a degree in Political Science. Following college she married her long-time sweetheart, Robert Allen and they together raised three children: Christine (Thomas) O'Brien of Macedonia, Kenneth (Diana) Allen of Denver, CO., and Stephen (Shelley) Allen of Akron. Primarily a homemaker, Katharine eventually returned to college to earn her teaching certificate and joined her husband in the field of academics, tutoring students with special needs and learning difficulties. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother of seven, a loyal and loving wife, a friend to everyone she met, a voracious reader, a deep thinker, a champion of the democratic process and a great storyteller. She chronicled her family history and was devoted to her hometown of Saugatuck, MI., which was her home for part of her life and has been her home away from home for the rest of her life. They will both be sadly missed by their three devoted children and by grandchildren, Julie (Matthew Robinson) Buchholzer, Gretchen (Rick) Jimenez, Nicholas (Kat) Messer, Joni Allen, Jill (Juan) Montesinos and Julie O'Brien; and great-grandchildren, Ella, Zayd and Madison. Robert is survived by a sister, Margaret Kumpel of Racine, WI., and was preceded in death by a sister, Winifred Ducas. Katharine was preceded in death by sisters, Celia Allen and Jessica McEnroe. They both mourned the passing of beloved granddaughter, Natalie Allen in 1999. A private graveside service will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Saugatuck, MI.
