He later moved to Newton, Iowa, from where he mustered as Captain of Company "C", 22nd Iowa Infantry, on 22 August 1862. He became badly ill during the Siege of Vicksburg, and resigned his commission on 8 August 1863.
He lived in Missouri and Arkansas after the War. In his 1881 pension application, in which he claimed he was totally disabled from his wartime illness, he described himself as 5'10" tall, with dark hair and blue eyes. It is not clear when or why he altered the spelling of the family name; he appears as "Ault" in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Censuses.
