His surname in Odawa means something like 'Green Leaf' as in fresh vegetation, but not as in the color. He enlisted in Co. K., 1st Sharpshooters, 9 July 1863 at Northport, for 3 years. He was working as a hunter and fisherman at that time. His age then was 28. According to a sworn statement in his pension file, from Aaron Sargonquotte, he was wounded at Spotsylvania 25 May 1864 in his right groin and left eye by shell fragments. He was in Alexander Hospital No. 2 from June 1864 to March 1865. He was mustered out at Delaney House, DC, 28 July 1865, with 24 months service. 12 March 1884 George Askibuk appointed William Bryant Green of Northport his attorney to pursue an invalid claim with the government. He died before the processing of his claim was completed, but benefits were paid to his wife, the former Mary Macsaba. He was a great-uncle to Jonas Shawandosa (1879-1970).
