Joseph was a Native American soldier in the Civil War. He served in Company K of the 1st Michigan Sharpshooters. When he joined the army, he used the name Ka-Ka-Kee.

He enlisted in Company K, 1st Michigan Sharp Shooters, August 21, 1864 Grand Rapids Michigan at age 35.

Mustered September 1st, 1864. Discharged in Alexandria, VA. Residence in 1864 is Chester in Ottawa County Michigan.

After the war he changed his last name to Me-she-ka-kack. His name on his death record is Me-She-Ka-Kuch.

He was the uncle of another soldier in Company K, Aaron Sahgahnahquato, also known as Aaron Pequongay. Died May 12, 1901.
