Son of William and Nancy (Luther) Cole. He married Matilda Bass 15 Mar 1849 in Owen Co., Indiana. They were the parents of Polly S., John Wesley, Nancy Carolyn, Rachel A., David A., Hannah, William R., Charlotta, Guy Wilson, and an infant son.

This birth date is from his tombstone. According to other information, his birthdate has also been given as 30 December 1824, and as 26 January 1824, the date given in the history of Boone County, Iowa. This history states that he was born in Eastern Tennessee. His parents brought him to Clay County when he was a child.
