2nd Battalion
The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment
British Army

He served with the 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles Battle Group deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Kgn Deady died in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham of wounds sustained on August 23 in the southern Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province. His team was protecting a compound when it came under prolonged, intense small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire. After Kgn Deady suffered a gunshot wound, he was given first aid at the scene before being evacuated to Camp Bastion and then to the UK for treatment.

Aged 22, he was from Westhoughton, Bolton and joined the army in October 2008. After completing infantry training, he was posted to Cyrus for the battalion's theatre reserve training in preparation for his first deployment to Afghanistan in February 2010. He returned to Helmand in July for his second tour of duty. Although small in stature, he was a superb young soldier with huge character and a great talent for finding humour in the darkest situations.

Kgn Deady leaves behind his parents Julie and Mark, siblings Daniel, Declan, Devon, Dion, Eddison and Brodie, large extended family and many friends. A family statement said in part, "We lost a wonderful Son, Brother, Uncle, Grandson and friend; he is going to be missed by all. At this moment we are experiencing the hardest times of our life. Darren was proud to do a job that he loved and most of all believed in, his little brother once turned round to him and asked him: why do you fight? and Darren simply replied; "To make a difference".

Funeral with full military honours was held on September 22, 2010 at St John the Evangelist Church, Wingates, Bolton.
