He was serving with 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment Battlegroup deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Cpl Dunn was killed when his Jackal armoured vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province.

Aged 27, he was from Gateshead. He joined the army in 2000 and previously served in Iraq. He was on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan and was described as the epitome of an airborne signaller. As communications detachment commander responsible for all critical radio and satellite links, he was employed in one of the most dangerous and demanding jobs in the Battlegroup. Known as "Dunny", his calm and collected nature along with his expertise inspired his colleagues. A passionate football fan, his support for Newcastle United FC knew no bounds.

He leaves behind his wife Cheryl, daughter Emily, mother Vicky, brothers Christopher and Michael, extended family and many friends.

Funeral with full military honours was held on January 17, 2011 at St Albans Roman Catholic Church, Pelaw, Gateshead.
