Earl was born November 12th, 1895, in Seattle, Washington. He got his name "Leslie" by a woman who did a cow-girl act. As a baby, he had curly hair and rosey cheeks.
As a man, he weighed between 160-170 lbs. He was 5'10" tall with dark brown hair, brown eyes, and an olive complexion. His hair grayed early, and he was completely gray upon his death on July 5th, 1950, at 54 years old.
His brothers and sisters called him "Dutch". He was in a play where he was a Dutch-boy at school. He went to Broadway High school till his sophomore year, and attended Central Grade school. Other reports have his last grade listed as 8th grade.

Earl loved to swim and walk with his brothers and sisters through the woods to Greenlake. He worked out by lifting bar-bells and liked to do acrobatics and handstands.
His father was Charles Wilbur Brown and his mother was Minnie Olive Mahan.
There were seven children in all:

2. Myrtle Lenora,
3. Alice Irene,
4. Roy Mahan,
5. Earl Leslie,
6. Walter Wilbur, and
7. Ruth Lois.
He was married three times, first to Clara Louise Miller, second to Myrtle LaVera Conaty on the eighth of June, 1918, and third to Janet Irene Elis.
Earl met Myrtle at a dance, and they married when he was 23 years old. They were married 25 years and had three children: Bob, Betty, and Bill.
He worked in the building of the Smith Tower, delivered baked goods, and took fire-boat training on Harbor Island.
Earl worked for the Seattle Fire Department when they still used horses, and retired after 28 years.
He played on the fire department's baseball team for several years. He won the Northwest Handball Championship in 1936, with a friend, Louie Burns.
Earl also served three years in the Navy during World War I as a Chief Boson's Mate. He drove a yellow cab, worked in a liquor store, and managed apartments on Capitol Hill. He played golf, swam, and taught kids how to swim.
His grandchildren used to call him "Grandpa Chief".
He loved to sing and two of his favorite songs were, "Shine on Harvest Moon", and "Little Doll with the Sawdust Doll".
In his apartment, he had a pull-down bed that his grandchildren thought was neat. Granddaughters, Donna and Bonnie, were allowed to play in one of the vacant apartments in the building he managed. For breakfast, he would make a soft boiled egg and toast. A treat for the day was usually a soft ice cream cone.
He bought their shiny shoes. They liked to play with a couple of toys that he had...Scottie dogs that walked and a magnet bird that drank out of a glass.
When Earl asked Bonnie who her favorite Grandpa was in the presence of Grandpa Stackhouse, the little 5 year old looked at them both and said "I love you both!".
He died of a heart attack on the 5th of July, 1950. He was 54 years old.
