MAPLETON, Iowa -- Edward V. Gosch Sr., 87, of Mapleton died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Mapleton, with the Revs. Robert Fritzmeier and Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Mr. Gosch was born March 18, 1915, in Monona County, Iowa, the son of Hans J. and Caroline (Jacobsen) Gosch. He graduated in 1933 from Mapleton High School. He was a charter member of Future Farmers of America and served as treasurer.

He married Ruby A. Rickert on Nov. 13, 1937, in Vermillion, S.D. The couple began farming in Cooper Township. They farmed in the Mapleton community until 1966, when they moved into Mapleton. After retiring from farming, he took up carpentry. Mrs. Gosch died July 18, 1998, in Sioux City.

He was a member of Vesper Lodge 223 A.F. & A.M. and United Church of Christ. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed woodworking, playing cards with friends and horses.

Survivors include five daughters, Janyce L. Lee of Denver, Colo., Karen J. Kennedy of Omaha, Carolyn C. and her husband, Tom Pierce of Mapleton, Ruby A. and her husband, Larry Kuczler of Oroville, Calif., and Lou Ann M. and her husband, Roger Gray of Omaha; a son and his wife, Edward V. Jr. and Lora of Omaha; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by three sisters, Leona Gosch, Lucille Lacey and Dorothy Brent; two brothers, Arthur Gosch and a baby brother; a grandson, Michael Owens; and a great-granddaughter, Madeline Owens.

Pallbearers will be Bret Lee, Tom and Steve Owens, Jason and Mark Pierce, Brian Gosch, David Rose, Chris Kuczler and Mark and Scott Kennedy.
