Mathilde is believed to have been the daughter of Johannes (or Janne) Henricksen (or Henrichsen) and Metta Maria Sophie Hansen. She emigrated to the U.S. from Liverpool on board the vessel "America" in 1873. She married Christian in Clinton, Iowa on 27 August 1874, after the death of his first wife.

She and Christian raised a family of eight boys and four girls.
