Known to family and friends as "Dacie," she was the granddaughter of Nicholas Oakes. Nicholas, a leading Iowa brickmaker, built the home in Iowa City now known as the "Grant Wood House," where Dacie grew up.

Dacie married Grover on 24 November 1917 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, where Grover was stationed with the 22nd Infantry Division. They were parents to Gail Frances Jacobsen Latham, Grace Kathryn Jacobsen Burden, and a stillborn child. The family lived throughout the country as Grover worked in the interstate busing industry. After his death, Dacie lived in Southern California near her daughters.
