Al was one of 12 children of a Danish immigrant couple, and was raised in western Iowa. The photo shows him (bottom right) with his brothers (and baby nephew) wearing the uniforms of various community baseball teams, about 1905.

He and Jessie were married on 13 January 1914 in Edinboro, Pennsylvania. He later sold insurance, and owned a farm equipment company in Spokane.
