US Congressman from Vermont. The son of Congressman Daniel Buck, he attended Vermont's Middlebury College and graduated from West Point in 1808, receiving a commission as Lieutenant in the US Army's Engineer Corps. He resigned in 1811 to study law, but returned to the military during the War of 1812 and served as a Captain of the 31st Infantry from 1813 to 1815. He then briefly practiced law in Chelsea, Vermont before devoting himself mainly to politics. Between 1816 and 1835 Buck served 14 terms in the State House of Representatives, six of them as Speaker, and he was also a Presidential Elector in 1820 and State's Attorney for Orange County (1819 to 1822 and 1830 to 1834). A Republican, he was elected to two non-consecutive terms in the US Congress, representing Vermont's 4th District from 1823 to 1825 and its 5th District from 1827 to 1829; he was not renominated in 1824 and 1828. In 1835 Buck settled in Washington, DC and spent his last years in the comparatively low position as a clerk for the War and later Treasury Departments. He was buried at Congressional Cemetery.
