Paul James Brathovde was born on May 23rd, 1920 in Glasgow, Montana. He passed away at his home in Packwood, Washington on March 10th, 2005 after a brief but stubborn battle with cancer.

The long-time Packwood resident was raised in Selah, Washington where he lettered in basketball. After graduating, he served his country in England and France during WWII with the Army Air Corps as an Armaments Instructor for P-47 Fighters. After traveling through 45 of the 48 contiguous states providing training, he was shipped to London, England and on to France through Omaha Beach immediately following the D-Day invasion. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945 following his return to the U.S.

After returning home, Paul attended the Yakima Business College and worked in several service station and automotive repair businesses around the Yakima Valley. He married Beverly Ruth Andress on April Fools Day of 1949 in Yakima, where they saw the birth of their first three sons.

After joining the Washington Army National Guard, the family moved to Ephrata where their youngest son was born. Housing consisted of an old firehouse on the abandoned airbase, but with a lot of hard work it soon became the loving home where their four sons would grow up. After twenty years of service in the Guard as an Administrative Supply Technician, CW4 Brathovde retired in August of 1974. Paul and Bev then moved to the home they built themselves near Packwood. Paul served on the Board of Trustees for High Valley Country Club, and as the Assistant Chief for the High Valley Fire Department.

Paul was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite, and a Shriner with the Afifi Temple of Tacoma and the Masada Temple of Yakima. Paul was also a long-time member of the Packwood Senior Center and the Merry Mountaineers Club, and an elder for the Packwood Community Presbyterian Church.

He was an avid outdoorsman, golfer, fisherman and pool player, and would always jump at the chance to play a game of cards. But his lifelong passion since childhood was for hunting! He hunted deer and elk in the same Wenas/Manastash area for over 50 years, and missed only one season over that entire period when he and Bev were traveling across the U.S. in their RV. Even facing cancer surgery, he told the surgeon that the main thing he cared about was being patched up in time for hunting camp. Sure enough, equipped with a walker, cane, feeding tube, and a tackle box full of pills, Paul and Bev spent the entire season living out of their wall tents and getting up before daybreak every morning to sit on some frigid hillside to hunt.

But most special of all Paul's gifts was his dedication as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend to most all that he met. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Beverly Brathovde of Packwood, sister Maurene Vernam of Yakima, four sons and daughters-in-law; Michael & Donna Brathovde of Ravensdale, Gary & Lynette Brathovde of Cusick, Richard & Susan Brathovde of Eugene, and Barry & Karen Brathovde of Colbert; as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews, all of whom he dearly loved.

Paul was preceded in death by his father, William Brathovde, mother Hazel (Kirk) Parish, sister and brother-in-law Dolores and Bernard Gage, and brother and sister-in-law Billy and Patricia Brathovde.

A portion of his ashes were interred at the Evergreen Cemetery in Packwood, with the remainder scattered from a favorite hunting point on Manastash Ridge.
