William R. Carlson, 71, of Hermantown died Friday, July 17, 1998, in St. Mary's Medical Center after a long battle with emphysema and surgeries.

He was born in Duluth to Ray and Mabelle Carlson. Bill was a longtime resident of West Duluth, attending Ely grade school and West Junior High School, graduating from Hermantown High School in 1945. He was a master welder at the former Coolerator Co., and also welded for Butler Brothers and Barnes Brothers before entering the Army.

He was stationed in Alaska during World War II. After the war, he moved to Milwaukee, where he was employed as a certified Army and Navy welder for A.O. Smith Co. for 21 years, before returning to school. He attended Antigo College for two years and received his degree in special education from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He also received degrees in learning disabilities and as a reading specialist. He taught special education in Elcho, Wis., before returning to Duluth to teach at Denfeld High School, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of Myron Reed Masonic Lodge 297 AF&AM in West Allis, Wis., and West Duluth American Legion Post 71.

He will be greatly missed by everyone -- family, friends and especially his students who loved him dearly and always kept in touch after his retirement. The family would like to thank all the employees of Viewcrest Nursing Home for the love and kindness shown to Bill while a resident.

He was preceeded in death by his parents, Ray and Maybelle Carlson; and two brothers, Robert (Delores) and Richard (Carol) Carlson.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria; a son, Peter (Karla); two grandhcildren, Anthony and Danielle; a very special uncle, Gus Rakowsky of Duluth; a special son, Dan Stone of Hermantown; and many other relatives.

Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery
