Grand Master -- October 16, 1873 to October 21, 1875. Received the Degrees in Belle Point Lodge No. 20, Fort Smith, Arkansas. Became a charter member of Acacia Lodge No. 9 in 1867. Served as Master in 1870. One of the guiding lights in Kansas Masonry for almost 30 years. Served as Colonel of a Kansas regiment during the Civil War, which saw much action. Elected Presiding Judge of the 4th Judicial District in 1868. Greatly admired for his courtesy and dignity.

Owen Abbott Bassett served as a Lieutenant Colonel 9th Regiment of the Kansas Calvary during the [not too} Civil War. When the war was over he went back to Lawrence, Kansas, and practiced law. He was elected a District judge in 1868, re-elected in 1872, and declined to run again in 1876.

Owen Bassett of Ellsworth once a district
judge, aged 62, died the other evening while
sitting on his front porch.

home in McPherson county. He is the best
known Mason in the county and has for many
years been an authority on Masonic jurisprudence.

Judge Owen A. Bassett, who was well known throughout this section, died at his home in Ellsworth, Kansas, Sunday. He was a prominent lawyer and high up in Masonic circles. He was buried at Lawrence Tuesday. The Masonic Grand Lodge having charge of the funeral.

GREAT BEND, KANSAS
JANUARY 9, 1896--PG. 6.
Judge Owen A. Bassett, who for many years presided over the Lawrence judicial district, but who of late years has resided at Ellsworth has been taken to Chicago for surgical treatment by a brother there, who is a skillful surgeon. Judge Bassett is suffering from a diseased leg, and it is the opinion of his Ellsworth physician that it will be necessary to amputate it.

(Another article stated the same, but added that it needed to be amputated above the knee and wound was from when he was in the military.)
