He was then in Colonel John Bailey's regiment in of the 2nd regiment, from 01 Jan 1777 31 Dec 1779, and a Lieutenant in Colonel Ebenezer Sprout's 2nd regiment. His commission as Captain was confirmed by Congress 06 Sep 1779.
