Fanny was born and raised in Washington County near what, in 1872, became the town of Riverside. She married George Wallis Oakes of Iowa City in 1885; the photo with him is believed to be a wedding or engagement photo. She is shown standing between her sisters Mary and Letha in the second photo, taken about 1920.

After living briefly in Nebraska, where George's older brother was working, they returned to Iowa in the early 1890s. She eventually lived in the Iowa City home her father-in-law Nicholas Oakes built, which she inherited when her husband died. The home is now better known as the "Grant Wood House", where the artist lived from 1935 until his death in 1942.

Fanny was mother to Letha, Merle, and twins Gail and Grace ("Dacie"). She died of stomach cancer shortly after moving to Oklahoma to live with Dacie.
