George was one of six children of noted Iowa City brick and tile manufacturer Nicholas Oakes. After finishing his secondary schooling, he worked in that trade with a brother in Nebraska before returning to Iowa City to work in his father's company, and later with his own firm in Columbus Junction.

He married Frances Susan "Fanny" Lingo in Iowa City in 1885. He was father to Letha, Merle, and twins Gail and Grace.
