John was the son of William Radebaugh and Eliza Randall. He married Margaret Ann Lingo in Washington County on 29 May 1858. They had at least two children, Jane E. and William N.

He enlisted age 24 as a Private in Company "B", 22nd Iowa Infantry on 6 August 1862, and was promoted through the ranks to Fourth Sergeant of the Company. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Third Winchester, Virginia on 19 September 1864, but was paroled shortly after.

John died of disease just after returning home from his service.
