George Ahlgren was an Army second lieutenant on an Air Force C46 transport plane flying from Hamilton Air Force Base, California, to Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas, when it crashed into Armer Mountain, 65 miles northeast of Phoenix, Arizona. All 27 servicemen (including 19 cadets returning to the US Military Academy at West Point, New York, after spending Christmas vacation with their families in northern California) and one servicewoman were killed.

While at the University of California, Berkeley, Ahlgren rowed eight-oared crew all four years. In 1948 the varsity Berkeley crew defeated the University of Washington eight-oared crew in the semi-finals, then went on to defeat the Harvard eight in the finals. The Cal/Berkeley eight crew, including Ahlgren, then represented the US at the 1948 Olympics in London, winning the gold medal in the final.

The aircraft that crashed, killing George Ahlgren, was a C-47, not a C-46, according to press accounts.
