Rona was my grandmother and I loved her dearly. She enjoyed going to horse races, traveling to California to spend time with her sister Berte, and socializing with her neighbors in the small apartment building in NYC where she lived for 55 years. The last year of her life was spent with my wife, son and me at our home in Virginia. During the late fall of 1992 she became really frail though her mind remained sharp. In early December she was admitted to the hospital in town. When I visited her in the hospital the morning of Dec. 4, 1992, before even saying hello to me she asked me what day it was. My dad, her only child, had passed away Dec. 5, 1988, almost four years earlier to the day. Reflecting on the question, the thought crossed my mind that Grandma didn't want to live through another anniversary of my dad's death. She passed on peacefully later that very morning.
