Melvin L. "Mudge" Achenbach, 65, of Smyrna, died on Saturday, January 1, 2000 at home.

Mr. Achenbach had been a painter with Local #100, Wilmington, for 32 years, retiring in 1994. He had also worked as a cook in his wife's restaurant, Helen's Famous Sausage House, Route 13, Smyrna. A US Air Force veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of the David C. Harrison Post #14, American Legion, Smyrna; the Newman Lee Urban Post #8801, V.F.W., Smyrna; the Police & Fire Rod & Gun Club, New Castle; and the Loyal Order of Moose, Smyrna.

He is survived by his wife, Helen M. (Arterbridge) Achenbach; children, Diane M. Phillips of Wilmington & Clifford J. "Butch" Murphy of New Castle; 5 grandchildren, Clifford J. Murphy, III, Michael W. Phillips, Amy M. Phillips, Wayne Lockwood & Kerri Hunter; 2 great grandsons, Zachary & Nicholas Hunter; niece Kimberly Thomas, who helped care for him, of Smyrna; and nephew, Richard Thomas of Smyrna. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest L. & Anna E. (Spinden) Achenbach; a brother, Ernest L. "Ackie" Achenbach, Jr.; and a sister, Darlene A. Weir.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2000 at SPICER-MULLIKIN FUNERAL HOME, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, Wilmington Manor, New Castle, where friends may call after 1 p.m. Interment in Riverview Cemetery.
