Officer King and Officer Richard Smith were shot and killed while attempting to take a man into custody for a mental health evaluation. The officers located the man at an address near the intersection of Ash Street SE and Coal Avenue SE. They were fired upon immediately upon arriving at the scene. Both officers were transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital where they succumbed to their wounds.The suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle but was located approximately two hours later. He was injured when the motorcycle crashed as officers attempted to stop him.

Officer Michael King was hired by APD on March 8, 1982, he later retired on December 27, 2002- and was rehired on May 14, 2004. Officer King's father retired from APD on December 8, 1983.

Both officers served more than twenty years of service each. They both retired, then came back to APD in a re-hire program.
Officer Smith leaves behind a wife and a 13 year old daughter, and Officer King leaves behind a wife and two sons ages 18 and 14. Chief of Police Ray Schultz has called August 18 and 19 the saddest days in the history of the APD.

The man who is charged with taking the lives of these two Officers has been charged with a total of five murders that day.
