Edward Cox was born on December 31, 1832, in District 13 Hardeman County, Tennessee. His Father, Alexander, was 29 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 23. He married Mary May Polly Cox in 1858. ( his first cousin, pretty common in remote areas then) They had 11 children in 20 years. His Grandfather Daniel Cox noted for being the first settler in that area in 1811 , seven years before the government opened for settlement. He was in the Civil war in the 6th Tennessee Calvary Union Army. According to his enlistment muster card, he was 31 years old 5' 9 1\2 " tall, fair complexion, blue eyes and light colored hair. He also had two other brothers in the war, one Union and one Confederate. Many families in this area were divided politically during this time. He died on February 28, 1922, in Hardeman County, Tennessee, at the age of 89, and was buried in Chester County ,Tennessee. Chester County was formed after the Civil War from parts of Hardeman, Madison, McNairy and Henderson counties. I was able to procure a government military Headstone for Edward. Placed the marker today, October 10, 2022 . Honoring his service 100 years after his death.
