Newton was the son of William John Otts (born abt. 1807, NC). Newton married Catherine Cunningham, daughter of Jesse and Delilah Cunningham). Newton was a Methodist Minister.

Newton Otts enlisted on 25 Apr 1862 in Fayette Co., Alabama, and served as a private in William A. Fitts' Co. I, 43rd Alabama Volunteers. He died of disease during Civil War.
