Jasper Otts enlisted in Fayette Co., in William A. Fitts' Co. I, 43rd Alabama Volunteers. (Ref. Tuskaloosa's Own, A Short History and Muster Roll of Confederate Units from Tuskaloosa County, Alabama, by Beasey S. Hendrix, Jr., p. 58).

Jasper lost his right arm below the elbow at the Battle in Petersburg, VA, during the Civil War (June 30, 1864). On his application for relief of maimed soldiers, it appears that he received $30.10 for this injury. After the war Jasper returned to farming.
