Mrs. Shroats was one of the neighborhood moms where I grew up. We had a great neighborhood. During the summer there was always a ball game at the Hensel's or the Shroat's. Those were the days-the 1960's. Esther was a great mom to all her children: Jackie, Mary and Denny. Denny and I were in the same class. He taught me how to fish and I caught my first and only fish with his help. It was a catfish at McKinley Park Lake in Marion and it was a pretty good sized one and I wouldn't take it off the hook. I was petrified of it. Denny almost wouldn't take it off, but he finally did. I won't forget that moment. Also, my first airplane flight was with Mr. Shroats. With my father, me and Mr. Shroats we flew from Marion to Columbus. Another memorable time in my life. During the flight home I had to go to the bathroom and I now think Mr. Shroats was kidding me about a "relief tube". Mrs. Shroats was a great mom and nice to all the kids in the neighborhood. She was also the high school secretary for many years at Pleasant.
