The spelling of his name is questionable. "Milledge or Millidge" is the spelling in Census records. The spelling "Miledge" is engraved on his wife Fannie's grave slab, but could be incorrect since it appears to be a new slab and not laid at the time of her or his death. If it is "Milledge", I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that his grandfather Charles Ingram Helms, Sr. founded and operated a Mill?

Milledge COX is the son of James W. COX and Margaret Julia Anna "Maggie" (GUNNELS) Cox. He married Frances A. E. M. "Fannie" Helms on 20 Dec 1870 in Santa Rosa County, Florida. They had at least 13 children:

- James Cox (1871-)
- Aaron Cox (1873-)
- Henry Cox (1874-)
- William M. "Will" Cox (Aug 1876-)
- Eliza Cox (1878-1944)
- Alex Cox (1880-)
- Samuel M. Cox (May 1882-)
- Jake Cox (Jan 1884-)
- Charles E. "Charley/Charlie" Cox (Feb 1886-1959)
- John Sherman Cox, Sr. (Mar 1888-1965)
- Caleb Cox (Apr 1890-1905)
- Earnie Cox (1890-)
- Mary Cox (Nov 1891-Nov 1891)

Milledge is shown with Fannie and various children in the following Censuses:

- 19 Jun 1880 CENSUS; Precinct 1, Santa Rosa Co., FL.
- Jun 1900 CENSUS; Crestview, Walton Co., FL.

In the 1880 Census he is shown as a "Log Hauler" and in the 1900 Census as a "Farmer".

CRESTVIEW

Died: At his home six miles south of Crestview at 1 o'clock Friday night, Milledge Cox, one of the oldest residents of this section. Mr. Cox settled here 22 years ago and is known all over the county and through south Alabama. He will be missed by everybody as everybody was his friend. Mr. Cox had a mercantile establishment at this place and was doing a good business. We extend our sympathy to the grief stricken family.

AT REST

M COX
JULY 25, 1852 - OCT 18, 1905
Through all pain at times He'd smile
A smile of Heavenly birth
And when the angels called him home
He smiled farewell to earth.
Heaven retaineth now our treasure
Earth the lonely casket keeps
And the sunbeams love to linger
While our sainted Father sleeps

COX
