[Died April 30, 2008, in New Haven, CT. He was born on leap year, Feb. 29, 1952, Gardner grew up in Waban, MA. He attended A.E. Angier Elementary School before heading to The Rivers School where he was a three sport athlete - soccer, ice hockey, and tennis. He matriculated at Harvard University, lived in Eliot House, and was a member of the Hasty Pudding Club. He also held a #1 ranking on the Varsity Tennis team. He eventually settled down in Guilford, CT, where he has lived since 1977. At the age of the 30, Gardner was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a condition that had previously claimed his mother, brother, and two sisters, all before the age of 40.

A survivor of both a heart transplant and two kidney transplants, "Gardy" continued to live each and every day to the fullest in spite of his increasing physical limitations. He won two gold medals in tennis at the 1990 Transplant Olympics in Indianapolis, he was a proud member of Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd", he was selected to speak at Harvard's Class of 1974 25th Reunion.

Gardner is survived by his wife, Julie Amatruda Rowbotham, son Gardner Chase Rowbotham, II and wife Kathryn Rowbotham of San Francisco, CA; sons, William Rowbotham of New York, NY, Samuel Rowbotham, and Harrison Reed Rowbotham, both of Guilford, CT. He is also survived by his step-mother, Midge Stafford of Bass Harbor, ME. Family and friends are invited to attend and meet for a Memorial Mass on Saturday, May 3rd at 12:30 at St. George Roman Catholic Church, 33 Whitfield St., in Guilford, CT. Swan Funeral Home of MADISON, CT will be handling the arrangements. Please visit www.MeM .com for an everlasting memorial.
