NAPLES, Sept. 19— Five American marines were killed Thursday when the helicopter they were flying crashed into the sea in a routine night operation in the Mediterranean, the United States Navy announced today.

The cause of the accident is being investigated, according to a press statement.

There was no explanation of why the report was delayed.

The dead were identified as Cpl. James D. Barker and Lance Cpl. Robbie D. Meyer, whose bodies were recovered, and Capt. Peter S. Swidenski, Lieut. Kenneth E. Miller and Lieut. William E. Baxter of Perinton, Mich. The other hometowns and were not given.

The Navy said the the Marine Corps CH-53C Stallion helicopter crashed at 10 P.M. Th ursday while approaching the Sixth Fleet amphibious assault ship Guadalcanal for a lan ding in the strait between Sardinia and Corsica after a routine training flight.
