Artist. Italian painter and sculptor, famous for his female portraits characterized by stylized faces and tapered necks. In 1902 Amedeo Modigliani enrolled in the "Libera Scuola del Nudo" in Florence and a year later he moved to Venice, where he attended the Institute for Fine Arts in Venice. In 1906, Modigliani emigrated to France, specifically to Paris, which at the time was the focal point of the avant-garde. Settling in the Bateau-Lavoir, a commune for penniless artists of Montmartre, he was soon occupied by painting, initially influenced by the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, until Paul Cézanne changed his ideas of him. Modigliani developed a unique style, the originality of a creative genius, who was contemporary with the Cubist art movement, but of which he was never a part. Modigliani is famous for his quick work, it is said that he completed a portrait in one or two sittings. Once finished, he never touched up his paintings. Yet all those who had posed for him said that being portrayed by Modigliani was like "having your soul undressed." Modigliani had initially thought of himself as a sculptor rather than a painter and began to sculpt seriously after Paul Guillaume, a young and ambitious art dealer, became interested in his work on black sculpture, in Paris he introduced it to Constantin Brâncuși and shortly after to Picasso. The conception of his painting based on linear drawing, the archaic purity of his sculpture and the romantic and troubled life of misery and ailments make Modigliani an exceptional personality in the framework of modern art, isolated from the currents of contemporary taste (cubism, futurism, dadaism and surrealism) while working in their own period. Today, Modigliani is universally regarded as one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century and his works are exhibited in the largest museums in the world.
