Employee of the United States Department of State in the US Embassy in Tehran, Iran. One of the 52 Americans held hostage by Iran from 1979 to 1981. He attempted to escape three times and was kept in solitary confinement for most of the time he was held. He was killed when the vehicle he was driving was hit from behind by a drunk driver.
