Willis Martin Baker was born near Edina, Knox County, Missouri, to Willis and Henrietta Hardy Baker. His father, Willis, was one of ten men who were shot in the Palmyra Massacre during the Civil War.
Willis was liked by all who knew him. During the last months of his life, he suffered from dropsy, yet his failing health did not cause him to lose his patience nor his kindly disposition. At the time of his death he was living the in Olive House in Canton, a popular boarding house at that time. Willis was a relatively young man when he died at the age of 48 years and 4 months.
Surviving Willis were three brothers, Ambrose, Edmund, and Robert, and one sister, Nannie. Burial was at the Antioch Cemetery.
