Son of Matthew Byrne and Bridget Fleming Byrne, of Golden Ball, Kilternan, Co. Dublin.

He enlisted in the British Army on 23 May 1908, and was amongst the first group of the British Expeditionary Force sent to France in August 1914.
He was killed in action at Zillebeke Wood, near Ypres.

His neighbour in Golden Ball,
Private Denis Doyle
died the previous day in the same action.
