Lieutenant-Commander Gerald Raymond Cadiz.
Son of Captain Frederick Galway Cadiz and Nancy Cadiz,
Husband of Nancy Yvonne Cadiz, formerly Freund, of New Malden, Surrey. [b. 1913]
Daughter of Fritz Freund and Maude Stevenson.
Gerald and Nancy were married in East Grinstead district, in the quarter ended December 1934.
a son, Michael, was born in 1937.
His widow married Edgar Wheatley in Chelsea, in 1947

He died whilst on board the SS. Henry Stanley, which was torpedoed by U.103 when off The Azores on 7th December 1942.

He enlisted in the Royal Navy in September 1924.

He was posted to various Ships as an Anti-Submarine Officer between 1938 and 1942.
In September 1942, he completed a posting to HMS Blenheim, a Destroyer Depot Ship.
He was then assigned to HMS Nile, the RN base at Alexandria, Egypt.

SS Henry Stanley left Liverpool for Freetown, Liberia, on or about 27 November 1942, as part of Convoy ON 149 which was heading for New York. It had a crew of 44 plus 8 Gunners [part of a Defensive Armed Merchant Ship team]. the were also 11 passengers which included Lionel Beaumont-Thomas M.P. and about 5 military personnel.
on 5 December the convoy dispersed.
After being hit, all onboard got into lifeboats, including the Master, Henry Jones.
The submarine surfaced and took the captain prisoner.
There were no survivors of those in the lifeboats, due to the weather conditions.

His name is recorded on the War Memorial in Holy Trinity Church, Rathmines, Dublin.

Frederick Galway Cadiz, 1873-1948. In the 1901 Census of Ireland, he was recorded as a 28 year old Master Mariner, who had been born in India. He [and 2 relatives] was staying with their Gunning cousins in Lecarrow, Co. Roscommon.
