Captain Robert Balderston Burgess.
The Royal Engineers.
Aged 24.

He served in the Inland Water Transport section.
He died from wounds on 9 December 1915, age 24, at No. 2 Casualty Clearing Station following a shell explosion as he was cycling through Rue de Dunkerque at Armentieres, France.

His enlistment address was recorded as 6R, Bickenhall Mansions, Gloucester Place, Portman Square, London.

Second son of Henry Givens Burgess.
Eldest child of Henry and his second wife Agnes Balderston. His birth was registered in Q1, 1891, in Enniskillen District.

The family home was later at Eglinton Park, Kingstown [now Dun Laoghaire] Dublin.

Educated at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen, and Trinity College, Dublin.

In the 1911 census, Robert Balderston Burgess was noted as a 20 year old Law Student, living with his parents at 12 Eglinton Park, Kingstown.

After graduating from Trinity College Dublin, he practised as a junior counsel on the north-eastern circuit.

His name is recorded on the headstone of the grave of his parents in Deansgrange Cemetery, Dublin,
and also on the following War Memorials.

Four Courts War Memorial, Dublin.
Trinity College, Dublin, 1937 Reading room.

He received one international rugby cap in November 1912, when Ireland played South Africa, losing 38-0. He was also "a Barbarian".
