Frederick Ennis Boyd was born on 21st January 1895, at 15, Abercorn Terrace, Harold's Cross Road, Dublin, to John and Mary Boyd. He was baptised privately on 22nd March 1895, and was received in the church on 3rd May 1895. His father was noted as "a Practical Engineer".

In the 1901 census, Frederick Boyd was aged 6, living with his parents at Terenure, Dublin. For further details see the bio of his father.

In the 1911 census, Frederick Ennis Boyd was living with his brothers and sisters at 22, Kenilworth Road, Rathgar.
He was described as a 16 year old Clerk in Commercial Insurance.
