80 other men of the 10th "Commercial" Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers died on the same day as William, during the Battle of Ancre, the worst day for casualties in the regiment for the entire war.


William Frederick Burrows was born in Dublin in 1898, son of Frederick Charles Burrows and his wife Lillian Kate Richman, who were married in Wandsworth, London, in 1897.
He was baptised in Sandford Parish Church, Ranelagh, in 1899.

In the 1901 census, the Burrows family were living at Mornington Road, Rathmines.
Present were,
