This memorial is for a cenotaph which is a monument erected in honor of a person who is buried elsewhere. Francis died in and was buried in Caldwell, Kentucky, but the burial site is unknown. His family erected this stone when their mother died, and included their father's name on the stone.

Marriage
Francis Clayton and Lucy Scott were married 6 Jan 1819 in Caldwell, Kentucky.

Additional Note
Previous trips to Smith Cemetery in search of the Clayton headstone had been fairly unproductive. The small, old cemetery was almost completely overgrown with vines, bushes, small trees, and tall grasses. A previous volunteer had also been unable to find the headstone for Francis and Lucy Clayton. Our trip in 2011 provided surprising success. While attempting to clear the Clayton portion of the cemetery, we discovered that the headstone for Francis and Lucy had been masquerading as a large bush!
