He was born in Henry County, on Deb. 16, 1913, to Johnnie Ashby and Minnie Minter Ashby. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Donovant; four brothers, Ocie Ashby, Melvin Ashby, Andrew Ashby and the Rev. George Ashby; and a grandson, J. Michael Barnes.
Ashby was pastor of Leatherwood Primitive Baptist Church. He was a carpenter and retired from American Furniture Co.
Surviving are his wife, Alice Stegall Ashby of the home; two daughters, Peggy A. Barnes and Linda A. Secrest, both of Martinsville; a stepdaughter, Linda Lavinder of Martinsville; a stepson, Jimmy Stegall of Martinsville; two brothers, Larry Ashby of Martinsville and Boyd Ashby of Penhook; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Norris Funeral Services chapel with Elder Thomas Radford officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
